Cristina Rueda-Uribe

I research the causes and consequences of animal movement, in the context of landscape connectivity and conservation. I am currently studying the spatial dynamics of animals in tropical mountains, focused on hummingbirds and their role as pollinators in the Andes of South America.

My research is being funded by a Quadrat studentship of the UKRI Natural Environment Research Council, the Rufford Foundation and the University of Aberdeen.

Ecological research

In my research I combine field and lab methods with modelling to generate data and knowledge about natural systems. Check out projects I am currently involved in and read my published work.

Conservation

Increasing our knowledge of diversity, biological interactions and ecosystem functioning will enable nature-based solutions and the involvement of local stakeholders and communities in conservation projects. My research is in close collaboration with official environmental agencies, private reserve owners and people living in my study areas.

Encounters of art & science

Communicating research widely is a challenge that requires creativity. People are interested in learning more about science, and through art they readily understand the beauty and value of the natural world. I have led community-based illustrated field guides, art workshops, art-science research and science communication projects. I also love nature photography!

A few words about my
academic background

I am a PhD student at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, supervised by Justin Travis, Lesley Lancaster, Isabella Capellini and Kara Layton.

I completed my MSc in Animal Ecology at Lund University, Sweden under the supervision of Susanne Åkesson and in collaboration with BirdLife Sweden.

I studied Biology at Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia. During my undergraduate studies I did research internships at STRI in Barro Colorado, Panama and in the Alexander von Humboldt Research Institute of Colombia.
